Navigation apps have long been built to answer a simple question: How do I get there? Google is pushing beyond that boundary with a comprehensive update to Ask Maps, the conversational AI built into Google Maps.

Instead of manually searching for takeout, scanning menus, and switching between apps, users can speak or type complex requests directly to the assistant.
For example, asking the app to find a specific dish along a commute—such as spicy pad kee mao with seafood—prompts Ask Maps to evaluate active driving routes, filter open restaurants matching those criteria, select the dish, and automatically stage the item inside an order cart. The user simply reviews the selection and completes the payment with a single tap.
The conversational ordering system is debuting first in the United States through merchant platform integrations with Square and Toast, with support for additional delivery platforms like Uber Eats coming soon.
Hotel and Event Discovery
Finding lodging often involves toggling through filters for price, proximity, and traveler ratings. Ask Maps streamlines this into a single conversational prompt.
Users can specify multi-layered preferences—asking for budget-friendly boutique hotels near a venue that also sit within walking distance of local gyms or quiet dining options. The assistant evaluates room rates, venue distances, and atmosphere reviews simultaneously. It can also surface nearby entertainment, like live music or local shows, complete with booking links.
Personal Intelligence: Connecting Maps to Gmail
To eliminate the friction of switching between apps while traveling, Google is integrating its Personal Intelligenceengine into Ask Maps, starting with Gmail.
When opted in, Ask Maps securely cross-references upcoming travel confirmations—such as flight times, hotel reservations, or dinner bookings—to inform its suggestions automatically.
Example: Asking “What should I do for a few hours before my flight tomorrow?” allows Ask Maps to pull your flight departure time straight from your email, check your hotel location, suggest nearby coffee shops or places to store luggage, and dynamically calculate the exact time you need to head to the airport based on live traffic updates.
Google notes that calendar integration and support for additional workspace tools will follow in future updates.
Virtual Departure Boards and Dynamic Transit Tracking
For daily commuters and urban transit riders, Ask Maps now features a dynamic Virtual Departure Board built right into the conversation window.

The update also refines how users interact with the app over time and how they help keep local data fresh:
- Multi-Day Memory: With chat history enabled, users can pick up previous travel planning sessions without starting over. You can ask the assistant to recall recommendations made days earlier for an upcoming trip, allowing itineraries to build organically over time.
- Photo-Based Business Updates: Updating outdated store hours or business details no longer requires navigating complex forms. Users can simply chat with Ask Maps or upload a photo of a physical storefront sign. The assistant’s vision model extracts the new operating hours from the image and asks for a quick confirmation before submitting the update directly to the map network.

Alongside these technical enhancements comes a massive international expansion. Ask Maps is rolling out in English across over 150 new countries and territories. Key international markets joining the availability list include:
